Meet the VA - Laura Holmes of Athena Accounting & Bookkeeping Services

I support female-led businesses throughout the UK with all things accounting! I’m a qualified accountant and bookkeeper and an expert in Xero and QuickBooks Online.

I offer an end-to-end service, from bookkeeping to year end accounts and everything in between, as well as power hours for anyone who isn’t quite ready to fully outsource their accounting but needs some expert advice.

I’ve also recently launched a course for anyone who wants to do their own bookkeeping but isn’t sure how to get started, what systems they need or how to be compliant.

Athena Accounting & Bookkeeping Services was born as a result of becoming a parent and finding the 9-5 on top of everything else was near impossible! I needed the flexibility, so with my experience and qualifications in finance, I did some research, sought advice and went in at the deep end! Four years on, I know it’s the best thing I ever did.

Who or what inspired you to become a VA?

Initially it was my daughter as I knew I had to be more present for her especially in the early years. Once the ball was rolling, I have been inspired by so many other accountants and bookkeepers who set up their own virtual practices.

Have you had any support starting up as a VA (mentor/family/network/financial)?

The 6 Figure Bookkeepers Club has been a massive support in terms of mentorship and the courses they offer to assist in getting started.

What has been your highlight since starting your business?

It has to be the great feedback I’ve had from clients.

What was your biggest challenge?

It took a while to get the right clients and for me to realise that a good fit with a client is so much more important than taking on any old client that expresses an interest!

What advice would you offer other new or aspiring VAs?

I would echo my answer to the question above – try to work with clients that you want to work with, that align with your business and values. It’s much more difficult to get rid of the bad ones!

What tools/apps/software can’t you live without?

Xero and QuickBooks as these are the accounting softwares I work with. I also love Asana for workflows and Toggl for time tracking.

What is next for you and your business?

We’re currently working on implementing some new systems and making process improvements to support us in the next period of growth.

What is the ultimate goal for your business?

To be able to support as many women in business with their accounting as possible to empower them to understand the numbers and build amazing businesses as a result.

Is there anything you would change about your VA journey?

I would have started networking sooner. I’m an introvert so it doesn’t come easily and I put it off for far too long! I made a commitment just over a year ago and I would absolutely recommend to other VAs to start as soon as you can. It’s obviously good to get your name out there but it’s also brilliant to make friends, learn from other business owners and it might even be fun!
