Guest Blog - Why choosing a niche is essential for your VA business

Hi I’m Rhian, a Virtual Assistant in the wedding industry for over 4 years.

I specialise in the creative and admin side of supporting wedding suppliers in their business taking on tasks they don’t have time to for or just don’t like doing such as social media, content creation, blog writing, Pinterest management and more!

I feel so lucky to have amazing clients that I get to work with, and this was only possible because my marketing and brand is very niched down to target just wedding suppliers. So if you want to work with your dream clients, then I would highly recommend choosing a niche for your VA business.

Do you have to choose a niche?

You can certainly be a successful VA without specialising in a specific industry but narrowing down your focus to get really clear on who your ideal clients are will ensure you get to work in your area of expertise with like-minded people.

Right from the start of my VA journey I decided that I was going to offer my services only to business owners in the wedding industry and from this I’ve experienced first hand how powerful and rewarding this choice was.

So keep reading if you want to learn about the benefits of choosing a niche and how to find yours if you are a new VA.

Why I chose the wedding industry as my niche

I knew I wanted to work in a creative industry and work with clients who ran design-based business, so using my skills and background from working as a seamstress in a bridal boutique, I already had this previous knowledge and insight into the wedding industry.

The more I researched this industry the quicker I fell in love with the creativity and vibe of this sector. By narrowing down my VA services to specifically wedding industry business owners, I could combine my passion for design, copywriting, and social media while supporting wedding suppliers who don’t like doing these tasks.

How niching down has worked for me

Choosing to specialise in the wedding industry has been one of the best decisions for my business. By focusing my marketing and training efforts on this niche, I've been able to attract my ideal clients that want to work with me for my specific knowledge.

This niching-down approach also makes it easier for clients to find me. With my website and social media clearly stating what job I do and who I serve, only my ideal clients reach out to work with me. It’s almost like a vetting process so I don’t waste time on discovery calls with clients who aren’t in the wedding industry.

Positioning yourself as the expert

One of the main benefits for choosing a niche for your VA business is that you can position yourself as the expert in your sector. Instead of being a general VA whose website and socials can get lost in a sea of other similar VA’s, niching down will allow you to stand out from the crowd with a distinct offer and skillset that will appeal to your specific clients.

When you become the go-to VA in your field, you will gain the reputation and title as ‘expert’ in your industry which will help you secure more of your ideal clients who are willing to pay a premium for your specialised services.

The benefits of niching down

  1. You can get clear with your messaging and brand so wherever your audience sees you online they know exactly who you serve and how you help them.

  2. It’s easier to create more specific and targeted social media content that speaks directly to clients in your niche. From addressing their pain points to sharing how you understand their industry, this will increase your chances of turning your audience into clients.

  3. When you want to improve your skills or go on training courses, you can look to coaches who specialise in your niche so you are learning from the best. Don’t waste your time listening to generic advice when you could learn more in depth tools and skills from experts in your field.

  4. After establishing yourself as the go-to VA in your industry, you will start to get referrals coming through from your current clients. This is the best form of advertising which is word of mouth and shows your name is being passed around in your industry.

Top tips for choosing your niche

If you’ve read all the benefits to choosing a niche and you want to find yours, then here are my top tips for choosing which sector to be a part of:

  1. Look at your hobbies and interests outside of work. Is there a common theme between them like outdoors, art, fitness, wellbeing, yoga, travel? Choosing a niche that you are already passionate about is always a good starting point!

  2. Think about what skills you already have. What sort of industry are they in and could you use these in a professional capacity? Leverage what you already know whether this is from your university degree, a saturday job you loved or a recent skill you have picked up.

  3. Research gaps in the market that don’t have many specialist VA’s yet. This could be your opportunity to position yourself as the leading VA in that industry.

  4. Create a picture of what your ideal clients look like. What job do they have, what pain points do they have in their business, where are they based and what size business do they run? This can give you more of an idea of who you want to market yourself to.

If you want to choose a niche - then just go for it

If you want to rebrand your VA business or you are starting from scratch, then go all in! Create your brand and messaging that target a specific industry and stay consistent with it. Nothing spectacular happens overnight so if you are passionate about the field you want to work in, then your ideal clients will find you when you start to market to them.
